Rules of Engagement: Starting Conversations with Women

The spark of any relationship, be it professional, friendly, or intimate, starts with conversation. This won’t be “The Pick-Up Artist’s 5 Secret Ways to Get The Hottest Women Alive Guide for $69.99” but instead some general guidelines you can apply to every facet of life. These five rules will help any Devious Gentleman properly start a conversation with a potential interest.

Find the Right Opportunity:

Act quickly. When you see a woman you find interesting don’t hesitate to approach her.  The wait will only lead to second-guessing and lost opportunities. At the same time don’t be imposing; there are certain times when the approach maybe better left for a later attempt (i.e. if she is having an in-depth conversation or if you know you will run into each other at a later point in time).

Be Genuine & Original

Don’t use pick up lines or act like someone you’re not. Instead, be genuine and original. Introduce yourself and remember light humor will go a long way. Observe both your surroundings and use them to your advantage for conversation aids.

Be Confidant

Every person will be somewhat nervous at the thought of rejection. This shouldn’t stop you from initiating conversation. Think about it, the worst that can happen is her dismissal of your approach, which is essentially the same thing as not having a conversation in the first place. Be confident in yourself, your qualities, and enjoy the possibility of a new connection.

 Listen

Conversation is a bilateral activity, and you should treat it as so. Don’t just nod and say ah-huh, actually listen to what she says. If she’s an exotic coral collector ask her about her most interesting piece.  Keep the questions specific and open-ended. Lastly, be genuinely interested in what she has to say or she’ll be sure to see through the ruse.

 End Appropriately

The grand finale, probably the most over-looked part of a great conversation. Knowing when to finish is a must have skill for any man. There is no point in dulling a great connection by dragging it out. When the conversation begins to slow, or preferably before that point, politely and cordially part ways hopefully procuring a way to connect at another time.

Now step forth and start great conversations with the world. Remember that these rules will apply to different situations and not just women.
